Processing Grief Through Art

I’m grieving the loss of a dear person who has become my best friend over the past two years. I read in a little booklet about grief that I can assist the grief process by embracing and treasuring my good memories. One of the last happy moments we shared together was visiting a sunflower farm.

The design of this box is based on a photo taken that day at the farm. I had wanted to incorporate the happy face of this precious friend in the midst of the flowers, but it seemed more appropriate to leave the space blank, to leave this as an unfinished work, at least for now. It is fitting because I feel a part of me is missing, just like a part of the design is missing. Maybe someday God will give me inspiration, or a reason to finish the design. Maybe it will stay this way as a reminder that grief never really goes away, but the Lord is the one who sustains me (Psalm 54:4).
